Overview

Gombe Stream is Tanzania's smallest national park, but its significance far outweighs its size — this is where Dr. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research in 1960, work that fundamentally changed how science understands primates and, in many ways, humanity itself. Today, Gombe remains one of the most accessible places on Earth to see wild, habituated chimpanzees at close range, set within a narrow strip of forest tumbling down to the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Itinerary information

Day 1 - Arrival at Gombe

Fly to Kigoma from Arusha or Dar es Salaam, connecting via boat transfer along the lakeshore (approx. 1-2 hours) to Gombe. Afternoon at leisure to settle in. Dinner and overnight at your lakeside camp.

Day 2 - Chimpanzee Trekking

Full day dedicated to chimpanzee trekking with an experienced park guide, hiking through steep forest terrain — treks typically run 1 to 4 hours before reaching a habituated group, followed by a permitted hour observing the chimps at close range. Gombe's small size and long research history mean its chimp families are exceptionally well habituated, often delivering excellent, close viewing. Afternoon at leisure by the lake. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 3 - Final Morning & Departure

A final optional short walk or lake swim before your return boat transfer to Kigoma and flight back to Arusha or Dar es Salaam.
