Mount Meru lives permanently in Kilimanjaro's shadow — literally, since on a clear day you can see Africa's highest peak from Meru's slopes. But Meru is a serious, spectacular climb in its own right: Tanzania's second-highest mountain at 4,566 metres, with a dramatic ash cone, a collapsed western crater wall, and genuinely excellent wildlife viewing on the lower slopes that Kilimanjaro's routes simply don't offer.
