This day tour combines a morning in Dar es Salaam with an afternoon in Bagamoyo, once German East Africa's capital and a major 19th-century hub of the slave and ivory trade, now a quiet, atmospheric town of crumbling coral-stone architecture.

Itinerary information

Day 1

Morning — Dar es Salaam City Tour

Depart your hotel for a guided tour of Dar es Salaam, including Kariakoo Market (a sensory introduction to Tanzanian daily life), the National Museum and House of Culture, and a drive along the Msasani Peninsula coastline.

Midday — Transfer to Bagamoyo

Drive north along the coast to Bagamoyo (approx. 1-1.5 hours), Tanzania's former colonial capital and a key 19th-century trading port. Lunch en route or on arrival.

Afternoon — Bagamoyo Heritage Tour

Guided walking tour of Bagamoyo's Old Town, including the historic Catholic Mission and its museum on the region's role in the East African slave trade, the old customs house, and the atmospheric, crumbling waterfront architecture that has earned the town UNESCO World Heritage Site candidacy. Return transfer to Dar es Salaam by early evening.
