Mafia Island Marine Park protects a stretch of coastline drawing one of the most reliable whale shark aggregations in East Africa, alongside pristine coral reefs that see a fraction of Zanzibar's dive traffic. This short escape is built for travelers prioritizing marine life and a remote, off-grid island feel over nightlife and infrastructure.

Itinerary information

Day 1 - Arrival & Reef Orientation

Fly into Kilindoni (Mafia Island's airstrip) from Dar es Salaam, with a short onward transfer to your beach lodge. Afternoon at leisure or an optional orientation snorkel on a nearby reef. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 2 - Whale Shark Excursion (Seasonal) or Reef Diving

Between October and March, a full morning boat excursion to swim with whale sharks in their known feeding grounds — a genuinely exceptional wildlife encounter, with sightings reliable in season though never guaranteed. Outside whale shark season, today's excursion focuses on Mafia Island Marine Park's coral reefs instead, snorkeling or diving depending on your preference and certification. Afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 3 - Final Morning & Departure

A final morning snorkel or beach walk before your return transfer to Kilindoni and flight back to Dar es Salaam.
