Overview

Mahale Mountains National Park is about as far from a conventional safari as Tanzania gets — a roadless wilderness on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the world's second-deepest lake, reachable only by light aircraft and boat. The reward for the logistics is one of Africa's largest wild chimpanzee populations, an estimated 1,000 individuals, tracked on foot through montane rainforest that tumbles almost directly into the lake. This is a genuinely different kind of Tanzania trip — for travelers who've done the classic safari circuits and want something remote, physical, and unlike anything else in the country.

Itinerary information

Day 1 - Arrival at Mahale

Scheduled flight to Kigoma, connecting to a light aircraft or boat transfer to Mahale (routing confirmed at booking based on current flight schedules). Arrive at your lakeside camp by early-to-mid afternoon. Afternoon at leisure to settle in, swim, or take a short orientation walk. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 2 - Chimpanzee Trekking

Full day dedicated to chimpanzee trekking with an experienced ranger and tracker team, following known troop locations into the forest. Trek duration and difficulty vary day to day depending on where the chimps are ranging — sightings are never guaranteed, but Mahale's habituated troops make this one of the more reliable chimp trekking destinations in Africa. Afternoon at leisure by the lake. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 3 - Second Trek & Lake Activities

A second chimpanzee trek (recommended, since sightings and viewing quality can vary day to day), followed by an afternoon of lake-based activities — swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing on Mahale's beach, a genuinely unusual pairing with a wildlife trek. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 4 - Departure

Final morning at leisure before your return boat/flight transfer via Kigoma, connecting back to Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

Is a chimpanzee sighting guaranteed?

No sighting in the wild is ever guaranteed, but Mahale's habituated troops and experienced tracking teams make this one of the more reliable chimp trekking destinations in Africa.

How physically demanding is chimp trekking?

It varies day to day depending on where the chimps are ranging — treks can be short and easy or longer and more strenuous through steep forest terrain. Reasonable fitness is recommended.

How remote is Mahale really?

Very — there are no roads connecting it to the rest of Tanzania. Access is exclusively by light aircraft and/or boat, and internet connectivity at camps is extremely limited.

Can this trip be combined with a classic safari circuit?

Yes, though the logistics require careful planning given Mahale's remote routing via Kigoma — ask us about combining this with a Southern Circuit safari (Ruaha, Nyerere) or a broader Western Circuit itinerary.

Is Mahale better than Gombe for chimp trekking?

Both are excellent; Mahale is larger and more remote with a bigger chimp population, while Gombe (Jane Goodall's original research site) is smaller and slightly more accessible. Ask us if you'd like to discuss which fits your trip better.
