Most safari itineraries treat Arusha as nothing more than a stopover on the way to bigger parks — which means most visitors miss the compact, genuinely varied park sitting right on the city's doorstep. Arusha National Park offers something none of the bigger Northern Circuit parks do in a single visit: walking safaris, canoeing, and a game drive, all in one day, set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Meru.

Itinerary information

Day 1 - Arrival & Walking Safari

Depart your Arusha hotel for the short drive to the park. Begin with a guided walking safari with an armed ranger through montane forest, keeping an eye out for colobus monkeys, giraffe, and buffalo at close range and ground level — an activity not offered in most of Tanzania's larger parks.

Midday — Game Drive & Momella Lakes

Continue by vehicle through open grassland and acacia woodland toward the Momella Lakes, home to flamingos, hippos, and a wide range of waterbirds, with Mount Meru rising dramatically in the background. Picnic lunch with a lake view.

Afternoon — Canoe Safari (Seasonal)

Where conditions allow, a canoe safari on one of the Momella Lakes offers a unique, quiet vantage point on the park's birdlife and any hippos in residence — a genuinely different perspective from a vehicle-based game drive. Return to Arusha by early evening.
