Mount Kilimanjaro: 7-Day Machame Route Climb
Features
Overview
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular path to the summit, chosen by roughly a third of all climbers — and for good reason. Nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for its more demanding character (in contrast to the gentler "Coca-Cola" Marangu route), Machame rewards the extra effort with genuinely spectacular scenery, crossing five distinct ecological zones from rainforest to arctic summit, and a well-designed "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization profile that gives this 7-day itinerary a strong summit success rate.
Highlights
- Crosses all five of Kilimanjaro's ecological zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit

Day 3 - Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
A "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day — trek up to Lava Tower (approx. 4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp (approx. 3,960m), a net altitude gain that's lower than the day's peak, aiding acclimatization. Overnight camping.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the success rate on the 7-day Machame route?
Industry estimates commonly cite the 7-day Machame route in the 80-85% range, meaningfully higher than the 6-day version, thanks to the additional acclimatization day.
Do I need climbing experience or technical skills?
No — Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek. No ropes, harnesses, or climbing skills are required, just a reasonable level of fitness and a lot of determination on summit night.
How difficult is the Barranco Wall?
It's a scramble using hands and feet in places, not a technical climb — guides assist throughout, and it's considered one of the most enjoyable, rather than most feared, parts of the route.
What's the difference between Machame and Marangu?
Machame is camping-only with a stronger acclimatization profile and higher success rate; Marangu uses hut accommodation and is shorter, but has a notably lower success rate due to less time to acclimatize. See our separate Marangu Route package for details.
How much should I budget for tips?
Tipping guides, cooks, and porters is a real and expected cost on any Kilimanjaro climb — we'll provide detailed guidance on recommended amounts when you book.
It was a nice experience
