Mount Meru Trek 3-Day Climb Package

Meru, Tanzania
3 days

Features

Duration: 3 days

Overview

Mount Meru lives permanently in Kilimanjaro's shadow — literally, since on a clear day you can see Africa's highest peak from Meru's slopes. But Meru is a serious, spectacular climb in its own right: Tanzania's second-highest mountain at 4,566 metres, with a dramatic ash cone, a collapsed western crater wall, and genuinely excellent wildlife viewing on the lower slopes that Kilimanjaro's routes simply don't offer. It's climbed by a fraction of the visitors Kilimanjaro sees, and it's increasingly used by experienced trekkers as a deliberate acclimatization climb before attempting Kilimanjaro itself.

Highlights

  • Tanzania's second-highest peak, with dramatic views across to Kilimanjaro on clear days
  • Genuine wildlife encounters on the lower slopes — buffalo, giraffe, and colobus monkeys are common within Arusha National Park's boundary
  • A dramatic volcanic landscape, including Meru's collapsed western crater wall (Ash Cone)
  • A shorter, less crowded, and less expensive alternative or acclimatization climb to Kilimanjaro
  • Armed ranger escort on the lower slopes, required due to resident wildlife

Itinerary information

Day 1 - Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Depart Arusha for Momella Gate, at the edge of Arusha National Park. Because of resident wildlife (buffalo and giraffe are common), an armed ranger accompanies the group through the lower forest zone. Trek through montane forest to Miriakamba Hut (approx. 2,514m). Overnight in hut accommodation.

Day 2 - Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

A shorter trekking day, climbing through changing vegetation zones to Saddle Hut (approx. 3,570m), with views opening up across the crater and, on clear days, toward Kilimanjaro. An optional afternoon acclimatization walk to Little Meru (approx. 3,820m) is available for those wanting extra altitude exposure before summit night. Overnight in hut accommodation.

Day 3 - Summit Day: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak, then descend to Momella Gate

Depart in the early hours for the summit push along the dramatic crater rim to Socialist Peak (4,566m), timed for sunrise views across to Kilimanjaro. Descend back through Miriakamba to Momella Gate, where your certificate is issued. Transfer back to Arusha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mount Meru a good warm-up for Kilimanjaro?

Yes — many experienced climbers use Meru as a deliberate acclimatization climb 3-4 days before starting Kilimanjaro, since it provides genuine high-altitude exposure without the time and cost of a second full Kilimanjaro-length trek.

Do I need technical climbing skills for Mount Meru?

No — like Kilimanjaro, this is a non-technical trek, though the summit day involves a genuine, sustained climb along an exposed crater rim.

Why is there an armed ranger on this trek?

The lower slopes of Mount Meru sit within Arusha National Park, home to buffalo, giraffe, and other wildlife — the ranger escort is a standard safety requirement for this section of the route.

How does Mount Meru compare to Kilimanjaro?

Meru is shorter (3 days vs. 6-7+), less expensive, and far less crowded, while still delivering a genuine, demanding high-altitude summit experience and spectacular views of Kilimanjaro itself.
