Udzungwa Mountains National Park Guide: Hiking, Primates & Waterfalls (2026)

Every other park on Tanzania's Southern Circuit is built around a vehicle. Udzungwa isn't. There are no game drives here at all — this is a park you experience on foot, and it rewards a completely different kind of traveler than Ruaha, Nyerere, or Mikumi.

What Udzungwa actually is

Udzungwa Mountains National Park covers roughly 1,990 square kilometres of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of ancient highlands often called the "Galápagos of Africa" for its extraordinary levels of endemism species found nowhere else on Earth, having evolved in isolation across millions of years. Elevation ranges dramatically, from around 250 metres in the lowlands to over 2,560 metres at the highest peaks, creating everything from lowland forest to bamboo stands and montane forest within a single park.

This isn't a savanna park with occasional forest patches it's genuinely a rainforest destination, and the entire visitor experience is built around hiking trails rather than game drives.

The primates: Udzungwa's headline attraction

Udzungwa is sometimes called Tanzania's "primate park," and the numbers back it up around 10-12 primate species live here, more than any other Tanzanian national park, including two found nowhere else on the planet:

Sanje mangabey — discovered relatively recently and known for playful, inquisitive behavior, this endangered species exists only in Udzungwa's forests.

Iringa red colobus (also called Udzungwa red colobus) another true endemic, seen moving through the high canopy in social groups.

Beyond these two headline species, expect sightings of black and white colobus, Sykes' monkeys, vervet monkeys, yellow baboon, and several galago (bushbaby) species on most guided walks.

Sanje Waterfall: the signature hike

The park's most famous single attraction is Sanje Waterfall, a dramatic multi-tiered cascade dropping roughly 170 metres through forested valley commonly cited as the tallest waterfall of its kind within any Tanzanian national park. The hike up passes through dense rainforest with regular primate sightings along the way, and rewards hikers with clear plunge pools you can swim in at the top. It's a moderately challenging half-day to full-day round trip depending on your pace and which viewpoint you aim for, and is by far the most popular single activity in the park.

Beyond Sanje: other trails worth knowing

Mwanihana Peak Trail — the serious multi-day trek, threading montane forest, ridgelines, and viewpoints up to the park's high plateau, with sweeping panoramas over the Kilombero Valley on a clear day. This is a genuine mountain trek, not a casual walk, and needs proper preparation.

Prince Bernhard Falls — a shorter, easier trail, good for visitors with less time or a lower fitness level.

Njokamoni Falls Trail — similar length and difficulty to the Sanje trail but far less used, meaning better odds of quiet primate sightings without other hikers around.

Birdlife

Over 400 bird species have been recorded in Udzungwa, including several genuine Eastern Arc endemics found in few or no other locations the Udzungwa forest partridge and rufous-winged sunbird among them. Early morning on the Sanje or Mwanihana trails is prime birding time, before the forest heats up and activity quiets down.

What's notably different from the rest of the Southern Circuit

Udzungwa has no game drives and, practically speaking, no Big Five safari experience elephant and buffalo are present in the park's lowland sections but sightings are incidental rather than the point of a visit. This is a hiking and primate-tracking destination, full stop. Most Southern Circuit itineraries treat it as a one-to-two-night add-on to a longer Ruaha, Nyerere, or Mikumi trip rather than a standalone safari destination, which is the right way to think about it come here for the forest and the climb, not for a game drive replacement.

Getting there

Udzungwa sits roughly 350 km southwest of Dar es Salaam, about 5–6 hours by road, and around 65 km (roughly 2–3 hours) from Mikumi National Park, making it a natural pairing on a Southern Circuit road itinerary. The main gate is at Mang'ula village. There are no lodges inside the park boundaries accommodation is at eco-camps and guesthouses just outside, near Mang'ula and the wider Kilombero area.

Best time to visit

June to October (dry season) offers the best hiking conditions firmer trails, clearer views, and generally more comfortable trekking weather.

November to May (wet season) brings lush, dramatic scenery and higher waterfall volume, but trails become slippery and significantly harder going, particularly during the heaviest rains from March to May. Bird and butterfly activity peaks during this period, making it a worthwhile trade off for visitors prioritizing that over easy hiking.
