Overview

Not every Udzungwa visit needs to be folded into a longer Southern Circuit trip. This dedicated 2-day itinerary is built for travelers who specifically want the rainforest hiking and primate-tracking Udzungwa is known for — the dramatic Sanje Waterfall, and a real shot at seeing primates found nowhere else on Earth — without committing to a full multi-park safari. It's a genuine change of pace from a conventional game drive: no vehicle required, just a guided hike into one of Tanzania's most biodiverse forests.

Itinerary information

Day 1 - Dar es Salaam to Udzungwa

Depart Dar es Salaam by road (approx. 5-6 hours via Mikumi) to the Udzungwa Mountains, arriving at the main gate near Mang'ula village by early-to-mid afternoon. Evening at leisure to settle in. Dinner and overnight at an eco-camp near the park.

Day 2 - Sanje Waterfall Hike & Return

Full morning guided hike to Sanje Waterfall a moderately challenging half-day trek through dense rainforest, with a strong chance of primate sightings along the way, including the endemic Sanje mangabey and Iringa red colobus. Swim in the plunge pools at the top before descending. After lunch, return road transfer to Morogoro for a SGR Train Trip back to Dar es salaam arriving in the evening.

Can we go with SGR Train to Udzungwa?

Yes, we can use SGR Train transfer from Dar es salaam to Morogoro, then road transfer from Morogoro town to Udzungwa. It saves time and most of people use this.

Is 2 days enough to properly experience Udzungwa?

Yes, for the park's signature activity — the Sanje Waterfall hike is comfortably covered in this itinerary's structure. Longer, more remote treks like Mwanihana Peak require additional time and can be arranged as an extension.

Will I definitely see the endemic primates?

Sightings aren't guaranteed on any single hike, but they're common on the Sanje Waterfall trail, and your guide will route toward recent troop activity when possible.

Is this a Big Five safari?

No — Udzungwa has no game drives, and while elephant and buffalo exist in the park's lowland sections, sightings are incidental. This trip is built around hiking and primate-tracking, not conventional game viewing.
